“Negev Nocturne” by Brandon Marlon

Staring through a plume of flame,
we savor the view of our inscape
reflected against shaded peaklets,
unperturbed by the discreet hyrax
scavenging for provender near an antre.

Beneath a breathtaking vault of stars
we sit astonished, humbled, and numbed,
helplessly buoyed by degrees of hope
till it seems utterly natural to fathom
an entire universe at one with itself,
and we celebrate in our souls
all that is good and gentle and just.

The chilly breeze refreshes
like some ancient spiritual tonic,
heaven-sent and desert-dwelling,
nightly witnessing celestial marvels
in this vast wilderness, seedbed of belief.
